Grief is an emotion often reserved for the passing of someone meaningful to us, but it’s also a normal emotion in life transitions, like job loss, a move, a ruptured relationship, an accident, the death of a pet, illness, empty nest and even burnout.
These life transitions may leave you grieving the loss of an idea, an expectation of what your life looked like or where it was going.
Whether you have a support system or not, loss has a way of isolating a person from others. You may feel pressure to be doing better than you are, or to be further along an arbitrary timeline. Well-intentioned comments that don’t meet you where you are can leave you feeling even more alone.
Acknowledging and grieving life’s many transitions is necessary, not to forget our losses, but to remember with more ease. Give yourself the time and space to be with your loss without judgment. Allowing keeps us open to the resources we need to learn to cope with and manage our pain.
