Thomas M. Lebeau, M.S.W., R.S.W., graduated from McGill University with a Master of Social Work degree, and completed training in marriage and family therapy at the CSSMM and with Dr. Virginia Satir. He is licensed by l’Ordre des Travailleurs Sociaux et Thérapeutes Conjugaux et Familiaux du Québec and holds a psychotherapist permit from l’Ordre des Psychologues du Québec. Initial training with Dr. Satir in conjoint family therapy was about people who hurt and about helping them go beyond that hurt. In response to her request, he translated her book ‘’Peoplemaking’’ into French, in collaboration with Mathilde Du Ranquet.. From the onset of his practice with individuals, couples, families and groups, his main interest and area of expertise became trauma-informed treatment. He worked for over 30 years in child protection services as clinician, supervisor, trainer, department head, director of quality of services and research-therapist. He was cofounder, psychotherapist, and coordinator of clinical services for the first Quebec chapter of Parents United (Parents-Unis Lanaudière), an NGO providing psychotherapy and mutual aid for victims of child sexual abuse and their families and he concurrently maintained a private practice. In 2003, he integrated EMDR into his therapeutic repertoire, under the skillful guidance of Professor David Servan-Schreiber, M.D., Ph.D., psychiatrist and Jacques Roques, psychoanalyst and past vice-president of EMDR Association-France; then he was accredited as an EMDR practitioner, by EMDR Association-Europe. Since 2004, he is a member of the McGill University Health Centre EMDR-Study Group. In 2005, he trained in MASTR-EMDR psychotherapy with Dr. Ricky Greenwald, Psy.D., psychologist and researcher. Then he proposed and participated in studies on the efficacy of MASTR-EMDR therapy conducted in Quebec Youth Centres, directed by Professor Mireille Cyr, Ph.D. at the University of Montreal.He is co-author of two articles on these studies published in: Revue Québécoise de Psychologie (2008) and the Journal of Child and Adolescent Trauma, (2010). He is the first author of a chapter entitled: L’efficacité du traitement MASTR-EMDR pour adolescentes agressées sexuellement: un exemple québécois, featured in a recent book on treatment and prevention of sexual aggression, edited by M. Hébert, M. Cyr & M. Tourigny, Agression sexuelle envers les enfants – tome 2,. Presses de l’Université du Québec (2012). At present, he is in private practice helping youth, adults and couples that have been exposed to traumatic events. His therapeutic approach is systemic-interactional and communications theory, cognitive-behavioral, EMDR and clinical hypnosis. Bilingual English or French language service.
